Community Forest Forests play an integral role in the traditional farming systems in Yungkhutoed valley. People collect leaf litter from their sokshing areas and possibly also from the forest. The leaf litter is used as bedding in the stable and turned into partly decomposed farmyard manure that is spread out over the wetland and dryland fields shortly before plowing. Cattle often graze in the forest and fodder trees are regularly lopped for fodder. In some cases whole trees may be cut down for a few days of fodder. Construction materials including shingles and firewood are also collected from the forest. Many of the products used by the rural households are made of material collected from the forest. Bamboo and cane are one of the most versatile forest products of the area. It is used for fencing, roofing, construction materials and all kinds of household items. A whole range of vegetables and mushrooms are also collected from the forest. Therefore, community forestry would be established to improve supply system as well as rational use of forest products from the scientifically managed community forest to reduce demand of timber and forest products from forest.
